Solid brass is the general name for a dense and durable alloy made by adding zinc to copper.
Brass was discovered in the first half of the first millennium BC.
In Arabic, copper is called "Nuhas" and copper-tin (bronze) alloy is called "surf"; the words "Shabah" and "Nuhas Asfar" are used for copper-zinc (brass) alloy. It is derived from the word "Shabaha", which means "Gold-Like Metal".
The Romans used to place brass plaques with the coats of arms of the members of the royal dynasty on the tomb. Many of these have survived to the present day. These were hammered and engraved with patterns. When silver and gold brought from the New World replaced brass in the manufacture of decorative objects, brass was used to make chandeliers, candlesticks, wall clocks and sundials.
Brass also became the basic material for scientific products used in fields such as astronomy.
